A site that provides an all-inclusive
holiday, usually with entertainment, at an
inclusive price. The first holiday camp on a
permanent site was opened 1894 near Douglas,
Isle of Man, by Joseph Cunningham. Billy
Butlin's first camp (accommodating 3,000
people) opened at Skegness 1935. Other
holiday-camp proprietors included Harry
Warner (1889-1964), whose camp at Hayling
Island opened 1931, and Fred Pontin (born
1906). Holiday camps reached a peak of
popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, but since
then several have closed down. In 1985 there
were 85 camps in England and Wales.
